The Caves of Tourtoirac

Very close to us here in Hautefort, and not far from Périgueux, is Tourtoirac, crossed by the River Auvézère, it's one of those villages in the Dordogne without secrets but full of big surprises.

For, in 1995, an immense set of caves of more than 3km was discovered.

Finally opened to the public in May 2010, this incredible find has been adpated for those with disabilities.  It is crossed by a brook and owes it's beauty to the incredible diversity of rocks within it.

You will be see "butterfly wings" suspended on the vault of the caves, stalactites which are hollow and fragile, massive columns worthy of a roman temple, incredible formations as well as a variety of other naturally occurring delights.
